Muscle Loss: The Silent Strength Stealer No One Warns You About

I was doing everything right—training, staying consistent, showing up, and my body still wasn’t responding. Strength felt harder to build, recovery slowed, and things I once did effortlessly became a struggle. What I didn’t realize at the time was that it wasn’t just about effort. My body had changed, and I hadn’t yet learned how to support it..

Midlife Unfiltered: The Hormonal Wall no One Warned Us About

Many women hit a moment in their 40s that no one warns them about. Your workouts leave you exhausted, your recovery takes longer, your midsection won’t budge, and your body starts feeling unfamiliar, even though you’re doing everything “right.” I spent years chasing symptoms, running labs, and seeing specialists, only to realize that discipline alone can’t outwork your hormones. The shift isn’t just physical, it’s biological, and understanding it changed everything for me.

THE MIDLIFE LIE: What We’re Told About Aging, and What’s Actually Happening

At 44, I thought I was depressed. I wasn’t crying every day, but I didn’t feel like myself. My sleep was fragmented, my motivation muted, and my energy flat. Doctors said my labs were “normal.” What I eventually discovered was something far more common and rarely discussed, the hormonal shifts of midlife and the physiological changes that can quietly impact mood, muscle, business, and identity.

6 Easy Pilates Exercises using Carakit Resistant Bands

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share an incredible opportunity I had to work with a company called Carakit. Carakit provides customized products and gift packages for people in recovery from cancer-related treatments. The valuable work they do to support individuals during treatments make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Carakit was inspired by the founder's own journey with cancer. The company was created to bring awareness and support to others going through a cancer related diagnosis and treatment. Each Carakit product has been meticulously chosen based on actual experiences of women who went through treatment themselves or recommendations from experts in that field. This adds a personal touch to their offerings, making them more tailored and empathetic to the needs of those going through cancer-related journeys.

I have been honored to be able to participate in Carakit’s post-surgery care packages that include multiple loop resistance bands. Each band offers different levels of tension so there are a lot of options to choose from. I created several easy, noninvasive Pilates related exercises to assist in the recovery process.

What is Pilates? Pilates is a series of exercises on either a mat or Pilates equipment that encompass a full-body workout by stretching and strengthening at the same time. Practicing Pilates connects the mind, body and breath which increases body awareness, makes movement more efficient and reduces the risk of injury. Pilates can be very empowering and effective during recovery, even if it is just a few exercises each day. It will help reduce stress, uplift your mood, improve flexibility and increase blood flow, which will help circulate the rich, oxygenated blood to the body when movement is limited.

The Carakit resistance loops include several upper and lower body exercises to accommodate every recovery situation. These exercises focus on small movements that will help you regain mobility and function after treatment and slowly build up your stamina and strength. Over time, these exercises will help you move through space more efficiently with daily activities as you recover. The muscles will work to maintain and regain strength, increase mobility and range of motion without impacting the joints. The bands will also give you an indication if one side of the body is more limited and will assist you as you work up to a fuller range of motion.

It is important to keep in mind your activity level prior to treatment, the type of treatment you had and the length of recovery required. Each person will have a unique timeline on how your body will be able to receive these exercises. I always recommend working to your comfort level and take it slow the first few times. Remember to listen to your body and go as far as you feel the exercises or stretch but not to the point of pain. Tightness is normal after surgery so it is important to start regaining mobility as soon as possible (after a doctors clearance) to achieve stability and control over all the movements.

These pre Pilates exercises can be very empowering and enhance one’s physical and mental well-being during recovery. Some of the exercises may be limited depending on what you are recovering from so remember to take your time, be patient and always consult with your care team and physician prior to participating in any new exercise after treatment. It's essential to approach exercises with care and patience, tailoring them to one's unique circumstances and choosing the exercises that are right for them.

Supporting organizations like Carakit and raising awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. If anyone is interested in learning more or offering support, visiting the Carakit website is a great way to get involved.
