6 Easy Pilates Exercises using Carakit Resistant Bands

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share an incredible opportunity I had to work with a company called Carakit. Carakit provides customized products and gift packages for people in recovery from cancer-related treatments. The valuable work they do to support individuals during treatments make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Carakit was inspired by the founder's own journey with cancer. The company was created to bring awareness and support to others going through a cancer related diagnosis and treatment. Each Carakit product has been meticulously chosen based on actual experiences of women who went through treatment themselves or recommendations from experts in that field. This adds a personal touch to their offerings, making them more tailored and empathetic to the needs of those going through cancer-related journeys.

I have been honored to be able to participate in Carakit’s post-surgery care packages that include multiple loop resistance bands. Each band offers different levels of tension so there are a lot of options to choose from. I created several easy, noninvasive pre-Pilates related exercises to assist in the recovery process.

What is Pilates? Pilates is a series of exercises on either a mat or Pilates equipment that encompass a full-body workout by stretching and strengthening at the same time. Practicing Pilates connects the mind, body and breath which increases body awareness, makes movement more efficient and reduces the risk of injury. Pilates can be very empowering and effective during recovery, even if it is just a few exercises each day. It will help reduce stress, uplift your mood, improve flexibility and increase blood flow, which will help circulate the rich, oxygenated blood to the body when movement is limited.

The Carakit resistance loops include several upper and lower body exercises to accommodate every recovery situation. These exercises focus on small movements that will help you regain mobility and function after treatment and slowly build up your stamina and strength. Over time, these exercises will help you move through space more efficiently with daily activities as you recover. The muscles will work to maintain and regain strength, increase mobility and range of motion without impacting the joints. The bands will also give you an indication if one side of the body is more limited and will assist you as you work up to a fuller range of motion.

It is important to keep in mind your activity level prior to treatment, the type of treatment you had and the length of recovery required. Each person will have a unique timeline on how your body will be able to receive these exercises. I always recommend working to your comfort level and take it slow the first few times. Remember to listen to your body and go as far as you feel the exercises or stretch but not to the point of pain. Tightness is normal after surgery so it is important to start regaining mobility as soon as possible (after a doctors clearance) to achieve stability and control over all the movements.

These pre Pilates exercises can be very empowering and enhance one’s physical and mental well-being during recovery. Some of the exercises may be limited depending on what you are recovering from so remember to take your time, be patient and always consult with your care team and physician prior to participating in any new exercise after treatment. It's essential to approach exercises with care and patience, tailoring them to one's unique circumstances and choosing the exercises that are right for them.

Supporting organizations like Carakit and raising awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. If anyone is interested in learning more or offering support, visiting the Carakit website is a great way to get involved.
